ENERGY SAVINGS OPPORTUNITY SCHEME (ESOS)

ESOS SCHEME

Government’s mandatory Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). The scheme introduced compulsory energy audits for all large enterprises, to encourage the uptake of cost-effective energy efficiency measures.

The reach of the scheme incorporates energy use in buildings, transport and industrial processes. Businesses are required by law to engage at least every four years in performing:
  • A measurement of energy use
  • An on-site energy audit
  • Identification of cost-effective energy efficiency recommendations
  • A compliance report, submitted to the Environmental Agency

An Ortus PPA can provide ‘no cost’ carbon reductions and reduced energy cost thereby offsetting the cost of the ESOS assessment.

MINIMUM ENERGY SAVINGS EFFICIENCY STANDARDS (MEES)

MEES COMPLIANCE

Regulations which require a minimum energy efficiency standard to be met before properties in England and Wales can be let or sold. MEES Regulations require a minimum energy efficiency standard to be met before properties in England and Wales can be let or sold.

Under the existing MEES requirements, landlords of commercial properties in England and Wales are prohibited from granting a new lease unless the property has an EPC rating of E or higher (except where certain exemptions apply). The prohibition on letting a commercial property with an EPC rating below E will apply to continuing/existing leases as well as new leases. As a result, both new and existing leases must comply with the requirement of a minimum EPC rating of E unless a valid exemption has been registered.
Installing Solar panels is an easy and effective way of improving the EPC rating of a building. An Ortus PPA allows this to be done at no cost to the owner or the tenants.
